Death

We see death all around us - a dead animal on the side of the road, dead bugs in the basement, the flowers in the vase all died, news report after news report of shootings, wars and accidents.

In spite of all that, I cannot imagine myself dead.

The dictionary defines death as: the act of dying;the end of life, the total and permanent cessation of all the vital functions of an organism.

The Bible dictionary defines it as the separation of the body from the spirit.

This spirit is the internal part of us that travels from pre-existence to mortality to eternity. Someday I will step out of this body and move on to my eternal home with my heavenly parents and my parents and all I know and love. It will be a joyful reunion.

So why then is death so hard? Why do we grieve so deeply?

From The Christ Who Heals by Terryl and Fiona Givens I quote:

The promise made by the Savior is one of unimaginable joy - perfect, untainted, unqualified joy. "And God shall wipe away all tears from them; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain.," But if God shall wipe away those tears, He can only do so by triumphing over the cause of those tears, which is death severing our most intimate family ties and connections. Any joy we receive in the absence of our loved ones is a partial joy, a fractured joy."

Heaven apart from those we love is just hell by another name.

Death then is not just a personal experience - that separation of spirit from body. It is a separation from loved ones. Thankfully we have the Gospel of Jesus Christ and know that God's work is to bring us back home with our families and friends.

I have a family here on Earth.
They are so good to me.
I want to share my life with them through all eternity.
Families can be together forever
Through Heavenly father's plan.
I always want to be with my own family
And the Lord has shown me how I can.
The Lord has shown me how I can.

Well it's hard to say goodbye and let's go
And it's hard to see it end
When the memories we've just made may never happen.
But it's harder for time to ever erase
The together times we've shared.
So, when we are apart remember all the love we shared together.
And for all that love, thank the Lord above
Who showed us the way that we can be together forever someday.
We will be together forever someday.
We will be together forever someday.
