Curse

There are many times in the scriptures where it talks about a "curse".  Too often we interpret those passages with the dictionary definition of that word.

The dictionary defines curse as follows

Curse - (noun)  An invocation or prayer for divine punishment or harm to come up on someone.

Curse - (verb)  To call for divine punishment of or utter a curse or curses on someone. To bring harm upon.

Cursed = to be under a curse.

But there is a better definition.  It is found in the scriptures:

A curse is a separation from God because of sin; a loss of the spirit of God

Key scriptures:

Doctrine and Covenants 29:41
Wherefore, I, the Lord God, caused that he should be cast out from the Garden of Eden, from my presence, because of his transgression. . .

Alma 3:19
Now I would that you should see that they brought upon themselves the curse; and even so. Every man that is cursed bring upon himself his own condemnation.

God does not curse us. It is impossible for Him to wish harm upon us or inflict harm. This is not in His nature. However, He does allow us to live in a world where harm is real.  The truth is that we humans cause all sorts of harm.  We harm ourselves or bring harm upon ourselves by our actions and the consequences of our choices.  When we do, we tend to withdraw from the Lord; we hide as did Adam and Eve when they realized what they had done.

The Lord has only one goal and that is to bring us home.  He has provided a way for that to happen.  All the principles of the Gospel are designed to help us to become one with God and with each other.  That is the meaning of the Atonement - At-One-Ment.

Of all the things I know for sure, I know that God does not curse us.  He can only bless.  He is God.
